So let me explain something to you about Afghanistan (and a few of you may know this already from being stationed other places…) there is a term they use around here, “tactically hot.” In the Air Force I think they are called desert princesses. Whatever the label, the meaning is the same. A girl with average looks who may be considered a stateside 3, comes to Afghanistan and all of a sudden transforms into total hotness; an Afghanistan 10! With the ratio of 100 guys to every one girl … even the most unfortunate looking girl is a stand out over here. So, when there is a girl up for grabs, some guys will go to some ridiculous levels to get their attention.
Case in point: There are two guys out here that I know. I’m friends with them both, but I only really care to know one of them. And of course he happens to also be the cuter of the two. Either way, they are buddies, so you don’t get one without the other. And they share a phone. Now, when I text them or call them I’m not actually texting and calling THEM, more so I’m just texting and calling my friend B. However, unless they make it clear who is on the other end of the phone, I’m never clear on whom I’m actually texting. But then again, it is VERY CLEAR to both B and his friend Z, that when I text or call I’m looking to speak to B. Have I totally lost you?
So the other night I text to invite B out. I should have just called. The conversation goes something like this:
Me: Hey you wanna hang out with us later on?
B: Well, we are hanging here since it’s our last night, but you can come hang here.
Me: Well maybe later?
B: Absolutely.
Me: Cool, can you pick me up?
B: Yes. When and where and should I be alone?
Me: lol…how about by the boardwalk, and whatever.
B: Beautiful, I’ll see you then.
I was anxious to see B before he left to return home, so I called and asked him to come get me early.
B: No problem. OMW (on my way)
So I wait, and when the truck pulls up and I open the door, it’s not B, instead it’s his buddy Z. And I’m pissed. He sees my obvious look of disgust and says something about B being in the middle of a poker game or something and so I get in the car, arms crossed, and silent. He tries to make small talk before finally revealing the truth. B didn’t even know he was coming to get me. He had never shared my texts with B at all! I said, you knew the texts were for B right? He said that he thought I was ‘someone else’ and that the texts were for him and by the time he realized, it was too late. I said, and what time was that? When you fucking pulled up here to pick me up and I wasn’t ‘someone else?’ He was embarrassed. I was embarrassed as well … FOR HIM. And I wanted to just go home.
I mean, what did he think? I was going to be like…oh, what a pleasant surprise. It’s a guy I can’t stand to be around … let’s make a night of it? HELL NO. I mean, the guy spent three hours one night showing me every picture and video he could find of himself and couldn’t stop talking about how EPIC he was. And then at one point he flashed a picture of himself in high school and it all made sense. HE WAS TOTALLY COMPENSATING for a childhood full of ridicule, self loathing and self doubt. But in the famous words of Alanis “I am not the doctor.”
I take comfort in knowing that he probably hates himself way more than I could ever hate him. I never did get to say goodbye to B. And Lord knows I’m not going to dare send another text.
